Plantain Volume Increases, Price Remains Stable
Plantain imports from developing countries to Europe and United States have increased in recent years. In the United States imports have grown from 214 to 268 thousand tons in the period 2000 to 2004. The aggregate value has also risen from $ US 74 to 86 Millions In the United States with unit price gyrating around $0.30 per kilo.
Similarly, in Europe imports grew from 26 to 44 thousand tons between 2000 and 2003, with a value increase of 15 to 21 million Euros. In contrast to the US market, the unit value fell from 0.55 in 1998 to 0.47 Euros per kilo in 2003. Within the European Union, Belgium is the main importer.
The chef exporters remain the same: Latin America, primarily Colombia, Ecuador and Costa Rica. Outside of this block the Ivory Coast also maintains a good presence.
Plantain remains a product of ethnic consumption, although it has a following in other demographics due to consumers’ willingness to try new foods; in the main, it is purchase by Hispanic and Caribbean population in the United States and Europe.
