Dominica major markets include the Caribbean and French West Indies, North America and the United Kingdom.
The average North American tourist visiting the Caribbean is 40 years of age and has a household income of US$60,000 and is no longer particularly rich or well-educated. On the other hand, 85 percent of the tourists from the United Kingdom are on the average 45 to 65 years with a household income of $50,000 Pounds.
An average of 2000 French Caribbean visitors comes to Dominica annually on a one day excursions. Dominica realized its largest increase in excursionists (8367) in 1995. The Characteristics of visitors from the other Caribbean island are similar to that of the French Caribbean.
From the United States, about 20 percent comes from New York, 11 percent from Florida and 7 percent from California (1999 Travel Review). Overall, an average of 35 percent of tourists visit Dominica for a 4 – 7 day period with an average of 80 percent of all stay-overs being non-nationals. LIAT and Carnival Cruise continue to be the leading air and sea carriers respectively. Dominica registers it highest levels of stay-overs during the month of July and October.
