Health Insurance Coverage Statistics

In the United States of America employers offer health care insurance to their employees. However, employment is not necessarily an assurance for health insurance coverage. Over the years, the commercial focus has shifted from being a manufacture centric economy to a service centric economy. There has been ample advancement in the working patterns, due to which health insurance coverage is unstable. Moreover, manufacture centric sectors have more access to health insurance as compared to service centric segments.

Considering the latest findings about the US health insurance coverage statistics, many small employers seem unable to offer health benefits. In addition, since many employees are wary of giving a large amount for health insurance, Americans are not keen on opting for job-based health insurance.

Health Insurance Coverage Statistics

As per a US Census Bureau, in 2008 almost 48 million Americans below 65 years did not opt for any kind of healthcare insurance. A health care research agency also determined that almost 27% of the population was less than 65 years. Further, almost 55 million Americans did not opt for insurance in 2007.

Over the past couple of years, there have been adverse effects of the recession on the health insurance sector. Considering which, almost 8 million will lose their health insurance coverage between 2008 and 2010. Moreover, if the rate of unemployment shoots up to 10% another batch of 7 million will lose their coverage. Adding up both the estimated numbers, the final number of uninsured Americans could go up to 58-61 million. If things continue to worsen, by 2019 nearly 67 million Americans would be uninsured.

Statistics of Uninsured American Citizens

According to Health Insurance Coverage Statistics:

  • 86% of uninsured citizens are naturalized or native citizens
  • In 2008, over 1 million part-time workers lost health insurance coverage
  • 32% Hispanics were uninsured in 2008

As noted, although in many cases workers are offered health insurance coverage, they cannot afford paying the premium. Moreover, small firms have blamed the very rise in premiums for not offering premiums. A major reason for this being the health insurance premiums increasing to almost 3%, and health insurance premiums shooting up to 12% yearly

Statistics for Uninsured health insurance coverage

Higher cost of health care and health care insurance has damaged the financial well-being of numerous families. A large number of low-income families without coverage face a tremendous impact of their fiscal standing in their day-to-day lifestyle.

Since many do not opt for health insurance, they are not eligible for preventive care; neither can they opt for diagnosis for the advanced stages of certain diseases because of the lack of proper attention at the right time. Moreover, since the diseases remain undetected for long, they cannot opt for therapeutic care. Considering these factors low-income families avoid medical care due to the cost involved. However the right to avail of emergency room facilities is not considered as availability of coordinated care; physicians in such scenarios are not necessarily required to treat the conditions, but do help to stabilize them at least.
