Acid found in moss can cure cancer!
Researchers claim that a compound derived from tiny lichens (moss) could be
used in chemotherapy drugs to kill cancer cells.
Laboratory tests of the compound - usnic acid - have shown that the substance is
an effective anti-cancer agent, and that it lacks the toxic side-effects of
traditional chemotherapy drugs.
Dr Virginia Appleyard, from Dundee University, said that unlike current drugs, usnic acid does not provoke DNA damage that can later result in the development of a secondary tumour.
"The interesting thing about this research is that many of the current drugs in chemotherapy provoke DNA damage. This can result in a secondary tumour developing later in life, especially for young patients. But the usnic acid did not produce this same effect," the Scotsman quoted her, as saying.
Usnic acid is already being used in anti-inflammatory and anti-viral drugs, but boffins are now hopeful that it can be used for cancer therapies as well.
The compund was tested on breast and lung cancer cells, and the study team said it could prove effective against many different types of cancer. Of late, researchers have been trying to find natural sources to derive compounds which may fight the cancer.
Dr Appleyard said cancer researchers were now moving on to animal trials of the compound, which if successful, would pave the path for the development of clinical trials.
The 7 L's that Prevents the 7 Cancers
According to the report released 31st, October 2007 by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund: "if we adopt weight management, proper nutrition and exercise are key to reducing our risk of cancer". Researchers said: "examining the causes of cancer this way, across the entire lifetime is called the life course approach". More than 7000 studies from around the world offer some recommendations to reduce cancer risk.
According to the report the seven cancers are that of: esophagus, pancreas colon, rectum, uterus, kidney, and breast. Since many scientists consider adipose tissue as an endocrinal organ, I think that the increase of volume of the adipose tissue (obesity) causes increase of secretion of certain hormones that stimulate abnormal cellular multiplication. Again I think that 7 L's can prevent these 7 cancers.
1.Lean ... one should stay lean.
2.Least . at least 30 minutes of exercising daily.
3.Leafy eat leafy vegetables plus fruits.
4.Limit .. your intake of red and processed meat.
5.Little .. contamination with pesticides and hormone foods.
6.Liquor should be reduced to the minimum.
7.Luqaimat .. Luqaimat training technique should be exercised 7 times daily.
The seventh L is my innovation. Luqaimat will help people to lose weight and staid lean, in the same time it reduces the intake of red and processed meat and can include leafy vegetables and fruits. It is new habit adoption which proved very successful.
Researchers said: "the most striking thing to emerge from the report is the importance of overweight and obesity". And since every extra pound brings greater cancer risk as the report says, I think that Luqaimat diet which gave outstanding results for all obese and even non-obese who tried it will be of great value for all people as lifestyle behavior. A study published in the April 2007 edition of the American Psychologist have concluded that dieting doesnt work. This fact is the result of reviewing of 31 long term studies lasting between 2-5 years. The study indicated that one can initially lose 5-10 percent of his weight on any diet in the first 6 months but then weight comes back even more.
