Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elhashemy November 7, 2007 A new US study of 9 – 12 years old children suggest that those who do not get enough sleep (9 hours average) are at increased risk of getting obese. The study was performed at the University of Michigan by Dr Julia Lumeng who looked at 785 children from 10 US cities and analyzed their sleep patterns, weight and height. The study mentioned only two reasons behind the insufficient sleep-obesity link; however, we can find further logical reasons in several other previous studies confirming that link:
1. Insufficient sleep makes children tired, so they will move less and exercise less, hence burn calories less.
2. Insufficient sleep makes children liable to loss of control over types and volumes of food, hence their intake of calories increase.
3. Sleep deprivation increase the secretion of hunger hormone (Ghrelin) and decrease the secretion of satiety hormone (Leptin), both actions result in excessive weight gain.
4. Insufficient sleep can be linked to exaggerated craving for fat over other nutritional components of food. Since fat is a neurotransmitter of the nervous system including the brain's hunger center, it is biologically needed by people who sleep less.
5. Lack of sleep disturbs the whole endocrine system, specifically the melatonin hormone cycle, resulting in malfunctioning of the metabolism and in turn triggering obesity.
The above reasons have been witnessed by me during managing my obese patients. I observed that those patients who slept more than 7 hours per day were more capable of abiding with my Luqaimat diet (which calls for eating 7 micro-meals "Luqaimat" daily), than those who slept less.
