Scientists call this the P57 molecule, a steroidal glycoside extracted from the heart of the plant. It works by fooling the brain into thinking that the stomach is full. This clearly indicated the potential of hoodia in weight management and its use was then made available to the public.
Hoodia Gordonii was first marketed as a food supplement in the United States in 2004 and it quickly became popular as an appetite suppressant. It is currently being sold in the form of diet pills, as pure hoodia or mixed with other ingredients. Other Hoodia supplements are in manufactured in liquid form and others in powder form to be mixed with liquids.
