Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies And Henoch-Schonlein Purpura
Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), also known as anaphylactoid purpura, is a form of blood vessel inflammation or vasculitis, which affects the capillaries in the skin and frequently the kidneys. HSP results in skin rash in the posterior part of the lower extremities and is associated with joint inflammation and cramping pain in the abdomen. HSP occurs more commonly in children; and is believed to result from a disturbed immune reaction following an infection or a reaction to some medication.
The Ayurvedic treatment of HSP is aimed at treating the basic pathology of the disease, reducing the symptoms and preventing complications. To treat the vasculitis and skin rash, medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Gandhak-Rasayan, Saarivadi-Churna, Tapyadi-Loh, Chandrakala-Ras, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira) and Khadeer (Acacia catechu) are used.

Inflammation of the blood vessels in the kidneys can cause blood and proteins in the urine. This is treated using medicines like Chandraprabha-Vati, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Gomutra -Haritaki, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Chandan (Santalum album), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera). For inflammation of the bowels, medicines used are: Arogya-Vardhini, Praval-Panchamrut, Kamdudha-Ras, Sutshekhar-Ras, Shankh-Vati, Agnitundi-Vati and Panchamrut-Parpati.
The overall prognosis for patients with HSP is quite good. However, adult patients may have more long lasting effects or serious complications, specially related to the kidneys or the bowels. A few patients may even have a recurrence of the disease. Ayurvedic medicine has a major role to play in the treatment of such patients.
