If you have nail fungus you may realize that it is not that easy to get rid off. You may have just contracted it or you may be a long time sufferer.

The truth is nail fungus infection are difficult to cure. Even with medication the infection can be chronic and persistent. Some people are forced to live with this condition for a large part of their lives. I have seen a lady suffering from it for the past 20 years.

Symptoms are a dark or yellow discoloration of the nails and sometimes the nails become unusually crumbly and thick. Most times there is no pain.

There are various treatment options. The most common type of treatment is to use a topical anti fungal ointment or a medicated nail varnish. If your fungal infection is mild then these may work but if your infection is severe then you may have to choose an oral anti fungal medication.

Oral medication is a more effective method to treat nail fungus. The drawback with oral medication is that they are rather toxic to the body’s system. Overuse or prolong use can cause liver damage in certain people. I have known cases where the doctor has refused to prescribe certain oral anti fungal because the risks to the patient were too high.

Both topical and oral medication will usually have to be continued for 3 to 6 months for it to be effective.

An alternative remedy to cure nail fungus is to use vinegar.

Method to use vinegar:

- Firstly, use a nail file to file down your affected nail just enough to expose the top layer of the fungal infection. Do this each time before you soak your nail in vinegar. Remember to disinfect the nail file with disinfecting alcohol before and after you use it. This is to prevent the possibility of any fungi being left on the file and re-infecting your nail the next time you use it.

- Secondly, pour some undiluted vinegar into a bowl and soak your affected nails in it for 10 minutes. Do this twice a day.

- Thirdly, to be completely cured you should continue this regime for at least 3 months.

The use of vinegar is an old home remedy and is effective in most cases of nail fungus. It is also cheap and safe. So try it yourself!

You should see some improvements in a few weeks. The most important thing is to be diligent and do it twice every day.

However for a small percentage of people vinegar does not work . If you see no improvement after a month then you should consider other remedies.
