What is self-awareness and what does it require you to do? Well it requires you to acknowledge and be conscious of what you are putting in your mouth. The best way to become aware of this is to take a few days and start observing yourself. Write down what you eat, what triggers you to eat, how you feel before and after. By spending a few days you can work out when you are eating but not really hungry, whether you are eating healthy foods and whether you are eating due to emotion and not hunger.

This doesn’t take much to perform and will do wonders for you. You will learn and develop your ability to listen to your body’s needs and know when you are truly hungry and not just emotionally hungry. With the information you obtain you can’t start making changes.

For example, you may notice that you hardly drink any water but drink lots of sodas and juices. A great way to help reduce calories straight away is to cut out the sodas and juices that are NOT good for you and just drink water. Many people find drinking green tea or any herbal tea distracts them away from the sodas and then lose weight quite quickly with this simple switch. If you want something juicy as opposed to just drinking water all the time then instead of buying processed juices instead eat a few oranges or freshly squeeze your own orange juice. Anything in store will not be good for your health and vitality, even the juices that say freshly squeezed. They are not. Freshly squeezed juice doesn’t last very long – maybe less than a day. This is something they couldn’t stock in store!

Another example is that you may have noticed yourself eating every time you feel stressed or you spend your evenings eating to numb out the boredom. Now that you have become more aware that you do this you can start tackling it by writing a list of things to do in the evening other than relax in front of the TV. Of course you aren’t really relaxing. Is boredom relaxing? No! So write a list of things you would like to do, have always wanted to and then start working your way through the list. The best way to prevent eating out of boredom is to stop the boredom in the first place. Boredom means that a need isn’t being met. You may need to be more creative, need more exercise. Make your evenings fun and fulfilling.

If you didn’t have the self-awareness you most likely will never acknowledge or realize your emotional attachment to food or your excessive consumption of sodas/juices. So take the time to observe your eating habits and you will be on a great start for your weight loss.
