There are a lot of different ways to go about mole removal. It’s generally best to consult your local doctor or a dermatologist and sit down with them to discuss the different options that are available and what best suits you. We are going to look at some of these options now so you can start to better educate yourself.

When it comes to mole removal there are at least five different options a dermatologist will offer you: incision with stitches, incision with cauterization, shaving, laser mole removal and natural remedies.

1. Incision with stitches

I’ve had personal experience with this option as my wife has had several moles surgically removed by this method. It basically involves a surgeon cutting out the mole as well as the surrounding areas to make sure nothing is missed. The wound is then stitched up to allow it to heal naturally. This method does leave a scar but it will fade over time. If you have a cancerous mole it will most likely by removed by this method.

2. Incision with cauterization

This method has less scarring than the previous method and due to this is more popular with moles on the face. It involved burning the mole off close to the skin and due to the cauterization the bleeding is stopped and infection is much less likely. Cauterization used to be the preferred method for preventing infection before the invention of antibiotics.

3. Shaving

This is really only an option for benign moles because of the way the procedure is performed. A knife is used to shave the mole off layer by layer until it is level with the skin and as such any part of the mole under the skin is left there. So if you had a cancerous mole this method would be ineffective because the cancer can continue to grow and spread underneath the skin. Cauterization is used here is in the previous method.

4. Laser mole removal

This method can result in the least amount of scarring but at this point in time it is not particularly effective. This is because current day lasers are not powerful enough and can only penetrate the skin to a certain depth. This means larger or raised moles are not candidates for this method.

5. Natural remedies

Let me start by listing some natural remedies I’ve found on the internet: crushed garlic, lemon/apple/fruit juice, baking powder and castor oil and a raft of other suggestions. Sounds a bit shonky? I’d have to agree. If you do a search for “mole removal” in Google you will find tons of these sites that offer all kinds of natural remedy solutions to you mole problems but I suggest you save your money.

Summary

These are generally the five most popular options but you really should see your local doctor or dermatologist. And keep in mind, if you mole is cancerous you want to be getting the best medical advice you can find not just something you’ve read on the internet!
