Malignant melanoma, on the other hand, can be deadly. It can spread through the body if not caught early. It causes the majority of skin cancer deaths.

Melanoma was very rare in 1950s and has been increasing ever since. In 2009 there will be more than 60,000 cases of malignant melanoma, with almost 8,500 deaths. Just 10 years ago there were 40,000 cases and 7,000 deaths. Both BCC and SCC have been linked to sunburns. This makes sense, because a burn can cause skin damage, which can eventually lead to all kind of problems. Any burn, whether caused by the sun or by a fire, can damage your skin. But if you avoid sunburns you will be OK, no matter how much you stay in the sun.

In fact, most recent data shows that exposure to sun actually prevents skin cancer, including the most dangerous one – melanoma. Many studies show that in Europe and the United States the higher the sun explore, the lower the risk of melanoma.

But why do you hear exactly the opposite information? Because it sells a lot of sunscreen products.

People are spending millions of dollars on sunscreens every year and someone is making a lot of money. Most cases of melanoma occur in the parts of the body that are not very exposed to sunlight, such as the soles of the feet, buttocks, etc. Lots of studies show that the incidence and mortality from melanoma actually decrease with increased exposure to the sun. Studies that have examined the relationship between sunscreen use and melanoma show that they either have no effect or actually increase the risk. Plus, while it’s easy to produce SCC or BSS experimentally by ultraviolet light, it is very difficult to cause melanoma using the same method.

Another study showed that boswellic acids are potent apoptotic agents to cancer cells and another one shows that Boswellic acids from frankincense gum exhibit potent cytotoxic activity against CNS tumors.

Why Hasn’t the General Public Heard about This?It sounds incredulous but the anti-cancerous effects of frankincense has been known for thousands of years. Does it work for everyone? No, but compared to the effects of chemotherapy, frankincense DOES show great promise now and in the future. Researchers at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ identified a compound in myrrh actually kills cancer cells in the laboratory showing particular promise for the prevention and treatment of breast and prostate cancer. “As part of a larger search for anticancer compounds from plants, the researchers obtained extracts from a particular species of myrrh plant (Commiphora myrrha) and tested it against a human breast tumor cell line (MCF-7) known to be resistant to anticancer drugs.

How Can Someone Use Myrrh to Fight Cancer?

Myrrh can be diffused, applied topically as well as ingested. When diffusing it, remember that because of the amount of sesquiterpenes, this oil will oxidize every time the bottle is opened, meaning it will become thicker and thicker. You may need to clean your diffuser frequently since it will “gum-up” the cold-air diffuser. Topically, it can be applied “neat” that is undiluted or diluted 50-50 with a good vegetable oil so that it can be massaged into tissues, specifically the breast. When taking internally, myrrh can be placed in veggie capsules and taken with rice milk.

As we look at the chemistries of these three oils we see common factors-they are all anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and immune stimulating. These are three important properties for an oil to be helpful against cancer cells. There has been quite a bit of research regarding l-limonene and various different cancers-skin, liver, breast, lung stomach, kidney and colon in rats and rodents. One study showed that limonene and related monoterpenes display compelling anti-cancer activity. Limonene has been shown to have efficacy in preclinical models of breast cancer.
