It is very necessary to catch this disease at primary level to avoid serious damages. Initially patients do not accept the fact that they need psychological treatment, which proves very harmful to them. The symptoms of depression are also different in each case, so, analysis of the illness is difficult. Severity level of depression can drive the patients to suicide attempts. Change in behavior; negative thinking, unwillingness, sudden change in mood are some symptoms of depressive disorder.

Patients of depression cannot concentrate on a subject. It may affect their decision power too so such patients become upset. Self confidence is lost in such disorders. Low spirit, guilt complex, short tempered nature etc are common in all cases. If the illness is severe, patient can harm himself or commit suicide too.

Feeling of sadness without any reason is the common symptom of the illness. Feeling tiresome, lonely apathetic etc. can be easily found in these people.
Another sign of the disorder is loneliness. These patients run away from society and become extremely introverted by nature. Desire of food is also changed in these cases. It may be less or more than usual. Excessive nostalgic or sentimental nature is also common, so they become over emotional.such people cry a lot. Lack of Sexual desire can be found in this disorder.

Neglecting personal appearance, extreme laziness adds shabbiness to their personality.
Automatically it affects social status, performance at work, household discipline etc.

Mental disorder may cause physical illness like weakness, tiresome feeling, lack of sleep, restlessness headaches etc.

These symptoms may last for some days or even years. Some experts take initial and short term depression as a defense mechanism of human psychology. So, feeling depressed for a couple of days is very natural but if you feel in the same way more than a week you must help yourself come out of it. There is no point in diagnosing yourself so, consult a psychologist.

Sometimes depression can also be caused due to chemical imbalances inside the mind of a person. So, these are totally curable with mere medicines and do not deal with psychology. Some psychological disorders are hereditary. So, case history proves helpful to diagnose such cases.

Extreme stress, workload, emotional shocks, relationship troubles, serious loss etc. are a few reasons, which may cause depression. Social, educational and work environment is very important to build a balanced psychological nature of a person. Decision making ability, stress management, habits of self evaluation and meditation can help you to avoid ill- effects of stress.

Depression diagnosis usually includes study of case history, mental stress test, medication, psychotherapy according to the nature of the patients need. Generally, medication is used to treat the symptoms. So, psychotherapy is used in alternative manner with medication. It is harmful to take depression pills without consultation so a good psychiatrist is very necessary to cure depression.

If you find out these symptoms inside you, immediately contact your psychologist. Remember, this disease is totally curable. So, help yourself to live life with full zest.

Many people with depression are finding that antidepressant medications are not working for them. There are many different reasons why this is, but contrary to belief many scientific studies also show that these drugs not only do not work, they have side-effects and addictive properties that far outweigh any kind of so-called benefits. You do not have to worry; there are many different natural alternatives for your symptoms and reasons for this condition.

Gingko Biloba is an herbal supplement for treating depression that has very little side-effects, and many different benefits, both for this condition, as well as many other ailments. The Gingko tree is one of the oldest species of trees on the planet, and one of the most studied and used today. While many herbs that are used for medicinal purposes, this herbal remedy is used in a concentrated form instead, giving it even more potency in the long run. While there are over 40 different components that have already been isolated, only two have the beneficial effects for humans. However, just these two have more antioxidant effects than all components of other herbs combined.

Gingko Biloba has been used for centuries by Chinese herbalists for a wide variety of ailments, from symptoms of depression, to joint pain as well as an overall health elixir. While they used both the leaves and seeds of this long living tree, today just the concentrated form is really needed. Side-effects rarely occur and are not very common, they will include headaches, anxiety, diarrhea, restlessness and nausea and can cause some gastrointestinal discomfort.

How does this translate to beneficial effects regarding depression? While there may be many causes of this disease, two common factors are inflammation of the brain, as well as poor blood circulation. The problem is antidepressants do nothing to help these two factors, which is where Gingko Biloba comes in. This supplement has many anti-inflammatory properties, which relieves joint pain, as well as inflammation of the brain. It also helps with blood circulation, so more oxygenated blood gets to the brain, and provides relief from many of the symptoms associated with this condition. The high concentrated amount of antioxidants in this herb also helps fight the buildup of free radicals, which while created naturally in your cells, will buildup toxins at the same time.

This herb has other benefits as well. It can improve memory, elevate your overall mood, and help you get a good nights sleep. It can improve cognitive functioning, give you more energy, and flush toxins from your body. Many of these are common symptoms associated with depression that antidepressants do nothing to alleviate. Many people that suffer from this also take Gingko Biloba in combination with other herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wort, for overall health benefits.

As you can see, there are many natural ways that you can find help, and you do not have to take harmful medications for your treatments. This supplement is available in many different forms, including as an extract, as tablets, tinctures and powders. You can take up to 80 milligrams a day, and use it daily. The only real side-effect is that you will probably feel much better than ever before.

Learning how to cure depression naturally means that you need to recognize that the way you live has not served you well. That some changes need to be made.

Learning to change your thoughts (detailed in step one) is one of the most difficult things to do, but one that has the most potential for profound change. By difficult, I mean it will take time and effort to put it into place firmly. So be patient.

Depression is rather like a black hole. It has the power to suck you in. And the sides of the hole are slippery so it’s hard to climb out. However, if you learn to shift your thoughts away from your depression, you’ll find that somehow, you fly out of the hole.

Shifting the focus of your thoughts may be difficult at first, so again effort, determination and time are needed. Initially, I suggest that you search around in your mind for the happy times in your life. Where were you happy? What location were you in? Was it in a park, on a beach, on a camping holiday?

It will probably be somewhere natural. Once you recognize those times, then you may like to visit a similar location that’s near to where you live. Then look around you and try to observe the subtle details of life – the swaying of the trees, the birds singing, insects searching for food.

Put your judgements on hold. Just observe the life around you.

This may only be momentary the first time. But the shift away from you is what you are trying to achieve. Looking at other life forms and how they cope with life is a good way to do this.

Then, you can shift your thoughts back to this, any time during the day. If you can manage this three times in the first day, you’re doing well. Try to increase this every day.

If you can’t remember any times in your life that you were happy, then think of situations that give you a glimmer of happiness, of hope, now. What are their locations? By going to similar locations, you are automatically re-focussing your thoughts away from you.

Shifting your thoughts away from your problems tends to lighten you. In the first days, even weeks, you will probably not manage this very often, but slowly, slowly you are making profound and lasting changes. In these days, it will feel as if you’re not making any progress.

However, as the days roll into weeks, you will start to see a change. Not everyone around you will like the change. People often prefer the familiar, even when it’s negative. So don’t expect everyone to enjoy your new found freedom from depression.

Nowadays, most of us agree that everyday stress has become part of our modern living lifestyle (job and career challenges, raising children, financial problems, physical challenges, crossing a busy intersection, death in the family, etc…). But, we have a choice on how to react to it as mentioned by Dr. Andrew Weil:”… life moves from crisis to crisis I agree, but we have a choice as to how we react to the crisis, even if we are unaware that we do. How you react to disturbing events is mostly a matter of habit and Habits can be changed.”

In addition, it has been proven that prolonged stress can place a tremendous load on many organ systems in our bodies, especially the heart, blood vessels, adrenals, and immune system leading to many illnesses and chronic diseases. Therefore, teaching you how to relax your body in order to become better at handling stress when it arises is a very crucial step towards better health.

The following Techniques and Key Dietary Recommendations and Nutrients are vital components of a Stress Management Program and of a healthy lifestyle:

1. Smile and have more fun: Do things that you enjoy and help you smile since smiling makes your face muscle relax and sends immediate signals to your brain to make you happy.

2. Exercise: Exercise is a vital component of a comprehensive stress management program and of overall good health. Regular physical exercise is one of the best ways to clear your tensions and feel good, with more energy and better attitude toward life. People who exercise regularly are much less likely to suffer from fatigue and depression.

3. Meditate: When we meditate our mind becomes recharged with our own positive energy. It helps you calm down your nerves and helps you connect with your true nature. Try “Tai Chi”, an ancient form of meditative exercise which is now practiced by millions of people around the world to improve and maintain good health.

4. Learn how to Breathe: One of the most powerful ways to decrease stress and increase energy in the body is by breathing with the diaphragm. This kind of breathing can activate the relaxation centers in the brain and you can feel the difference in minutes. Practice slow deep breath in a quiet place, inhale for a count of four, hold your breath for few seconds and then exhale for a count of eight. Repeat the process until you achieve a sense of deep relaxation.

5. Express your Feelings: Emotions need regular venting; unexpressed emotions are the building blocks of stress, pain and illness.

6. Practice Yoga: as mentioned by Maria Costantino: “Yoga is possibly the supreme exercise, combining and harmonizing meditation with physical fitness to ensure that the mind and body function efficiently and to their maximum potentials.” Yoga enables and empowers you to control the natural and immediate reactions to a stressor.

7. Practice Progressive Relaxation: This exercise involves a deep muscle relaxation technique which helps you recognize tension and where it resides in your body. The basic procedure is to forcefully contract a muscle for one to two seconds and then give way to a feeling of relaxation. Since the procedure goes progressively through all the muscles of the body, eventually a deep state of relaxation will result.

8. Manage your Time: One of the biggest stressors for most people is time; they simply feel they do not have enough of it. Thus, set your priorities, organize your day, delegate as much authority and work as you can, handle the most important tasks first, avoid putting things off and don’t be a perfectionist.

9. Key Dietary Recommendations:

- Eliminate or restrict the intake of caffeine.
- Eliminate or restrict the intake of alcohol.
- Eliminate refined carbohydrates from your diet (sugar and white flour)
- Increase the potassium-to-sodium ratio in the diet in order to support your adrenal glands. This can best be done by consuming foods rich in potassium such as avocado, cooked lima beans, potato, banana, tomato and avoiding foods high in sodium such as most processed foods.
- Eat regular planned meals in a relaxed environment.
- Control food allergies as they can lead to chronic fatigue.

10. Key Nutrients:

- Several nutrients are very important for a healthy functioning of your adrenal glands (the control center in our body in handling stress); however, the B vitamins and vitamin C are the main constituents of many antistress formulas:
- Vitamin C: Extra vitamin C, in the form of supplementation along with increased intake of vitamin C-rich foods, is often recommended to keep the immune system working properly during times of stress.
- Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5): this vitamin is also very important during times of stress since its deficiency in the body can cause fatigue, headache, nausea, sleep disturbance and abdominal discomfort. Vitamin B5 is found in whole grains, legumes, cauliflower, broccoli, salmon, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes.
- Vitamin B6: beside wheat germ, good protein sources of b6 include fish, poultry, egg yolk, peanuts and walnuts. Vitamin B6 is used for people with stress conditions.
- Minerals are also important, with Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium leading the antistress list. Minerals that are helpful for their immune and enzyme support include Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and Selenium.

It’s simply amazing how much effort most of us have made trying to change problem areas in our lives! Scientists, self-help gurus, even religion, tell us our lives can be improved by focusing on one of five areas: beliefs, thoughts, behaviors, physiology, or feelings.

The Focus Has Been on Symptoms

What if I told you that problems in the areas I just named are actually symptoms of the root cause of our unhappy, unhealthy lives? Not only that, the conventional wisdom which tells us it takes willpower to change those areas is just plain wrong! Think about it for a minute. Why is it we find row upon row of self-help books in most bookstores? Why are there literally thousands of websites touting the benefits you can achieve in one of these five symptomatic areas?

Reducing Symptoms Is A Short-term Solution

It’s because none of the things we do to change those areas are permanent! Isn’t that true in your life? How many diets have been on? How much time have you spent examining your thoughts and feelings in therapy? How long have you been trying to find peace by absorbing religious beliefs? If you’re like most of us, the answer is “Too Long!” Here’s the real heartbreaker — it’s possible, with enough mental or physical effort, to experience some improvement in any of those areas. But all that work actually leads us away from the true source of those problems.

Five Basic Concepts

Before I reveal what that powerful source is, I’d like you to agree with me on some basic concepts.

Truth is rational thought about something.
Feelings are subjective experiences about something.
Behaviors are actions moving toward something.
Beliefs are our interpretations of something.
Physiology is the physical manifestation of something.

Even in the constantly changing world of scientific research, experts have agreed that the “something” in each of those statements is unseen. Here’s the truth: it is damage in the unseen “spiritual heart” of us that drives all the symptoms we experience. That unseen heart consists of millions of stored images from our life experiences. Until that heart is healed, we continue to experience illness, unhappiness and failure.

The Root Is A Bunch of Lies

Now, it would be cruel to give you this new, earth-shattering truth and leave you with no idea how to heal your spiritual heart. So I want you to know that at the very core of all that damage is a collection of lies. That’s right; all those damaged, negative images stored within your spiritual heart are based on lies about those experiences.

Strategies for A Long-term Solution

So, how to reverse that damage? The very first method you should pursue is allowing God to enter in to that deep, spiritual heart and heal the lies you’ve stored there. I don’t know any way to say it more plainly. But, as in traditional medicine, we can attack the problem through coordinated therapies. Another method of healing available to you is through a new field of science called “energy medicine.” You may have heard Dr. Mehmet Oz speak on Oprah of this exciting field of research. He agrees that, if you heal the spiritual heart, physical healing often follows. The techniques of energy medicine result in the fastest healing, other than God’s own, of the root of our dysfunction. It’s definitely worth your exploration.

Our Internal Image Maker

There’s one more tool you can add to your healing toolbox. It involves something not helpful all by itself, our own willpower, but along with God’s healing and energy medicine, it’s very useful. This tool is what Dr. Alex Loyd, founder of The Healing Codes, calls “fine-tuning our internal image maker.” Here’s a simple exercise to help get you started: Open piece of your favorite candy. Focus on every aspect of the experience. Feel it on your fingertips and in your mouth. Eat it very slowly. What’s going on now? What does the candy smell and taste like? Once the candy’s gone, go immediately to a quiet place and close your eyes. Focus on what eating that candy was like. This is how you tune your “image maker” to store realistic memories in your spiritual heart. By healing the stored memories based upon lies and training our image makers to create true memories of our experiences, we can stop the cycle of destruction in our spiritual hearts. And as simple as that sounds, being able to do so can put us on the road to health, happiness, and prosperity.

If you suffer from anxiety or depression or a combination of the two, you probably know well the difficulty of living with these conditions. What are the treatment possibilities and how are some better or worse, or perhaps risky? This is a question on the mind of anyone who is considering what the best approach is to treating their anxiety & depression. Let’s take a look at the standard mainstream approach that uses drug treatment and what the natural remedies options are.

The standard medications for anxiety & depression can be very effective in treating anxiety disorders, panic attacks, insomnia, and the usual symptoms of depression. However, they do have certain and sometimes severe drawbacks. Medications may treat some symptoms but leave others completely untouched. You then may find yourself experimenting with different medications and adding multiple others to your treatment regimen to address everything you are experiencing. Drug treatment can also result in side effects, creating new symptoms and problems that you did not have prior to beginning your drug therapy. The usual approach when this happens is to add more drugs to your treatment plan to address your new symptoms.

A reasonable and safe option is to explore the natural remedies and therapies available that have shown success in treating anxiety and depression. Although this too can be a case of trial and error and even require you to apply several therapies and remedies, the positive side is that there are rarely side effects to these treatment approaches. Another beneficial bonus is that natural remedies often improve your health and well being on several levels in addition to your anxiety and depression.

What Natural Remedies are Beneficial?

There are many options to consider when exploring natural remedies. Diet and lifestyle are the first things to look at. Sometimes excluding or including simple things in your diet can make a tremendous difference. Herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, aromatherapy and vitamin and mineral supplementation are all to be considered in a natural treatment plan.

What Natural Therapies are Beneficial?

Therapies differ from remedies in that they address the body’s physical and mental needs more directly. Exercise is important for anxiety and depression sufferers and the benefits can be felt almost instantly. Behavioral therapy, guided imagery, relaxation and meditation, and reflexology are all helpful though you may find one or a combination work best for you.

Treating anxiety and depression with natural remedies is a viable route toward achieving well being and should not be overlooked or disregarded. The benefits are very well worth the effort involved in pinpointing what works best for you.

What is music? All sounds are comprised of sound waves. What distinguishes music from other sound waves is the manner in which the sound waves vibrate and decrease from loud to soft. Dropping a metal pan on the floor presents jarring, erratic vibrations. Striking a note on a piano chord presents a softer more uniform and smooth transition from loud to soft. Obviously, a musical note is going to be much more pleasant to the ear.

There’s an old adage about how “music sooths the savage beast.” Not only is this true, it is actually an understatement. Music plays such a profound part of our lives, that we will barely scratch the surface here, but let’s give it an overview.

All of us grew up with certain songs or instrumentals that strike a chord that reverberates through our entire being. For example, when I hear “A Summer Place,” it immediately carries me back to summer months in the fifties. The experience is so profound that I can remember the feel of the sun on my face, the smell of hot dogs cooked over an open fire and the laughter of friends and family.

There is a theory that certain notes or chords resonate with a vibration that is particularly harmonious to specific people. Have you ever heard a song that gave you “goose bumps?” If so, then you give validation to this theory. When this occurs, the music has a profound affect on the subconscious. Add intense emotion to the equation and you have one powerful, indelible, blueprint on your subconscious that will follow you the rest of your life.

For example, let’s say that you receive news of the death of a loved one while a specific piece of music is playing on the radio. That particular music may have a lasting impression. Years later, for no apparent reason, you may find yourself immediately thrown into a state of depression upon hearing that same tune. The same can be true of “positive” feelings as described in the story above.

The subliminal effect of music is a proven fact. How often do you find yourself humming a fragment of a tune that you can’t identify only to discover that it’s a new “commercial” message you heard on your television. The advertising industry pays huge amounts of money to conduct research into why and how music works on the subconscious mind. This is also the reason why you see the recent trend by large companies to reconstitute classics originally performed by some of the greats of stage and screen.

Just for fun, the next time you find yourself humming a tune, try and remember when, where and under what circumstances you heard it for the very first time. The exercise will probably help you to better understand how past events have shaped your musical preferences. And, I’ll wager that the next time you hear “A Summer Place,” you will remember reading this article.

Happy Listening!
