<p>Mystics call the pineal &#8220;The Third Eye&#8221; and tie it to extrasensory experiences. And they write more about it than scientists.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s talk about the science.</p>
<p>The pineal guides our body-clock through 24-hour circadian cycles and seasonal adjustments. It times everything based on the amount of light it receives through our eyes.</p>
<p>The pineal gland is one stubborn gland. It hates changes in its routine, which is why jet lag hits when we travel. Interestingly, jet lag is a good sign for general health.</p>
<p>Like a lot of the other glands, the pineal is heavily involved with the adrenals. If the adrenals are in trouble, so&#8217;s the pineal. And vice versa.</p>
<p>A faltering thyroid gland takes a whack at the pineal. I haven&#8217;t found any place that says the reverse is true, too, but since our glands are big on reciprocity, I&#8217;m guessing that&#8217;s how it goes.</p>
<p>Fluoride works against both the pineal and thyroid, with the pineal probably getting the worst of the deal. It absorbs more fluoride than other body parts, and it pushes little girls into early puberty. It also calcifies the pineal over time, reducing its ability to do what it needs to do.</p>
<p>We need to rethink fluoride. It&#8217;s a hazardous, poisonous material that requires handlers to wear haz-mat outfits-complete with masks. If they dump fluoride into a river, they go to jail. If they dump it into our water supply, they get paid. What&#8217;s that about? Especially since all the talk about doing good things for our teeth is bogus. It does nothing good for our teeth, and it causes all sorts of problems for the rest of our bodies. Bottom line, we&#8217;re paying to be poisoned.</p>
<p>If you can&#8217;t sleep, it may mean your pineal is struggling. Getting your thyroid and adrenals to fly straight helps, but in the meantime, you might consider taking melatonin about an hour before bedtime (which your endocrine system wants to occur no later than 10pm).</p>
<p>Melatonin is a very safe hormone. In fact, when everything&#8217;s running right, the pineal creates enough of its own melatonin to handle things nicely, including sleep.</p>
<p>Most melatonin recommendations tell you to take 3mg, so that&#8217;s what I took when I decided to give it a try. Not so good. Oh, I slept well. And long. And followed that up with hours of a half-dead zombie routine-once I could, reluctantly, drag myself out of bed.</p>
<p>If you decide to give melatonin a try, consider 1mg to start. Then listen to your body to determine a level that works without putting you into zombie mode.</p>
<p>And before you consider melatonin, make your bedroom pitch black-no visible light anywhere. Not even from a clock-radio; throw a towel over it. The darker the room, the more oomph you get from your natural melatonin-and the better your odds of sleeping.</p>
<p>Can&#8217;t make the room dark? Consider a sleeping mask.</p>
<p>Amazing, isn&#8217;t it, that all this is going on in a gland you probably never heard of before.</p>

The usual treatment for rickets is to reintroduce a healthy supply of vitamin D, but this apparently does not work for individuals with XLH. This disease impairs calcium mineralization, and calcium is an important component in bone and teeth development. Children with poor bone mineralization often exhibit poor physical growth and are susceptible to spontaneous dental abscesses. XLH also leads to renal (kidney) phosphate wasting which ultimately destroys the tissues of both kidneys. Other symptoms of XLH include: consistent and regular bouts of bone pain, enthesopathy (pain in the tendons or joints,) lower extremity deformity, osteomalacia and rickets (softening of the bones in adults and children, respectively) and short stature.</p>
<p>Although reintroducing dosages of human growth hormones as treatment for the height problem is now being prescribed, researchers are also looking at the possibility of this protein hormone for the treatment of the other symptoms of XLH.</p>
<p>Human growth hormone helps in the development of bone and muscle tissues. It often acts as a form of linear growth booster and as an aid for the regeneration of damaged and / or stunted cell tissues. As evidenced by the lack of mineralization, teeth abscesses usually form in the mucosal orifice of a person with XLH. Human growth hormone treatments help in speeding up the calcification of teeth, plus the healing process of the body itself. Studies have shown that with human growth hormone treatments, some individuals with XLH have experienced less incidence of mucosal infection in the form of abscess. In some cases, untreated patients take longer periods of time before the abscesses heal, as compared to the 1 to 2 weeks healing time of people taking regular dosages of the protein hormone.</p>

<p>Many studies now show that SGA / LBW actually play a greater role in that child&#8217;s development in his or her adult life. There are theories saying that SGA / LBW may lead to diabetes, obesity and may even affect the intelligence of the child. Researchers are now claiming that babies with low birth weight are thought to have an increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes, and becoming obese in later life. The same study shows that there is a direct link between an increased birth weight and an increase in the baby&#8217;s intelligence quotient or IQ. So, if that theory is to be believed, babies born with SGA / LBW would have lower IQs than those who are born of &#8220;appropriate&#8221; or more than normal weight.</p>
<p>There are many causes of SGA / LBW. These include: alcoholism, chromosomal abnormalities, damaged or reduced placental tissue due to diseases, drug addiction, infections brought about by viruses, malnutrition (in the mothers,) severe anemia, tobacco smoking, and even prolonged or multiple pregnancies. Usually, with the cases of SGA / LBW, the only available option is by inducing labor early, especially when it is seen as a risk to the health of the baby. This option poses many problems to both mother and baby. For one thing, inducing labor is very painful. Moreover, children born too early usually have very high mortality rate, and are susceptible to many childhood diseases.</p>
<p>A new option for babies with SGA / LBW is to introduce slowly human growth hormones. This hormone is an important component in the development of bones and muscles. It is usually prescribed to children and adults who lack natural growth hormones in their systems, among many things. It is important to note that human growth hormone treatments are very potent, and should never be done without the counsel of medical practitioners &#8211; and in this case, an obstetrician-gynecologist. Also, this treatment is only done if the baby in the womb is in danger of being miscarried at any stage of the pregnancy. Dosages are prescribed with regards to many variables like: the stage of the pregnancy, the weight of mother and baby, the present health / medical condition of the mother, etc. Taking larger dosages of human growth hormones or taking them longer than prescribed will not serve any beneficial purposes.
